The Hungarian Financial Supervisory Authority (HFSA)

The mission and duties of the HFSA

As a member of the supervisory community of the European Union and in an integrating financial market, the HFSA shall

  • ensure reliable, continuous and transparent operation of the financial markets;
  • strengthen confidence in the financial markets;
  • promote the development of financial markets based on fair competition;
  • protect the legitimate interests of market participants;
  • support the reduction of consumers' risks by providing access to adequate information;
  • actively participate in eliminating financial crime.

Values respected by the HFSA

The two principal values respected by the HFSA are the following:

  • high-quality professional work, and
  • fair conduct.

Both the internal operation and the external relations of the HFSA are determined by these two principles.

  • In addition to professional skills and expertise, high-quality professional work involves the following:
  • Individual approach and the capability of decision-making. Settling matters and solving problems are both valued at the HFSA.
  • Foreseeing, long-term and proactive approach. The HFSA deems it valuable to take into account all the relevant contexts and consider short-term as well as long-term consequences.
  • Efficiency. Efficiency - as a value - assumes that only essentially required resources (time, human and material resources) are used for the HFSA's tasks and decisions.
  • Openness. The HFSA values the interest towards new developments, the willingness to understand those developments and the ability to accept and use new and different issues.
  • Continuous extension of knowledge. The HFSA considers the capability and willingness of its staff to continuously expand its knowledge through training and self-education, furthermore to disseminate all the acquired information and knowledge to the wider public. The values necessary for this task include language skills and adequate capacities for publication and presentation.

Similarly to high-quality professional work, fair conduct includes a lot of values as well:

  • Respecting others' dignity. Respecting the dignity of others in all aspects, without regard to sex, nationality or ideological views (especially religious and political views), is a value followed by the HFSA, with regard to its staff as well as in its external relations.
  • Equal treatment. The HFSA values unbiased conduct with regard to both of its staff and external relations.
  • Independence. The HFSA values the performance of its tasks on the basis of professional independence, being aware of its responsibility for the public and without any influence from any political or other interest groups.
  • high-quality professional work, and
  • fair conduct.
